Vascular Studies Q & A

What are vascular studies?

Vascular studies are noninvasive tests that help determine how well blood is flowing through your arteries and veins. These studies use sound waves (ultrasound), blood pressure measurements, or other imaging tools to detect blockages, narrowing, or other problems in your blood vessels.

They’re safe, painless, and don’t require needles or radiation. Vascular studies help doctors find early signs of circulation problems before they lead to serious complications.

What issues do vascular studies address?

At Parkview Cardiology PLLC, Dr. Sankholkar uses vascular studies to diagnose a wide range of conditions that affect blood flow. These include:

  • Peripheral artery disease (PAD): narrowed arteries in the legs or arms
  • Carotid artery disease: blocked arteries in the neck that can lead to stroke
  • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT): blood clots in the deep veins, usually in the legs
  • Aneurysms: bulging or weakened areas in arteries
  • Venous insufficiency: poor vein function that causes swelling or varicose veins

The tests identify problems before they worsen, helping him plan the right treatment to protect your heart and vascular health.

How do vascular studies work?

Most vascular studies are performed using ultrasound technology. Your provider moves a small handheld device over your skin, sending sound waves into your body. The waves bounce off your blood vessels and create images of how blood is moving through them.

Other types of vascular studies may use blood pressure cuffs, special sensors, or Doppler technology to measure how fast or slow blood is flowing.

At Parkview Cardiology PLLC, Dr. Sankholkar offers a wide range of in-office vascular tests to detect circulation issues early. These include the ankle-brachial index, lower extremity arterial ultrasound, and carotid artery ultrasound.

As a board-certified registered physician in vascular interpretation (RPVI), he provides an expert analysis to help you understand your risks and treatment options.

  • Leg pain when walking
  • Cold or numb toes
